Each industry requires translators who are not only linguistic experts but also specialists in their particular subject matter. It’s not simply a case of converting words from one language to another. A legal translator, for example, must conduct thorough research to ensure the translated document reads as if it were originally written in the target language.

In addition to their training in translation, they often hold additional qualifications such as a second degree, a master’s, or direct experience in their field. What makes a professional translator?
A specialised translator holds a degree in Translation and Interpreting (or the equivalent in their country). Speaking a language fluently doesn’t automatically make someone a translator—this profession requires specific training, mastery of translation techniques, and expertise with translation tools.
Professional translators also have credentials and years of experience dedicated to their field of specialisation. Many even hold additional degrees—for example, in medicine or engineering—which is why they focus on medical translation, technical translation, and so on.
Many people ask me how to become a translator. The first step is obtaining the right education. A degree in Translation and Interpreting is the most practical route, as it teaches the core skills needed. Unlike classical language studies, this degree focuses on the professional aspects of translation. That’s why most companies only hire translators with highly relevant qualifications or rare language combinations.
Finally, expert translators don’t just specialise in broad categories like legal or technical translation—many refine their expertise even further. For instance, some legal translators specialise in wills and estate documents, while others focus on contracts and corporate law.

The specialised translation process
Step 1: Understanding your needs
First, the client gets in touch with me, Javier Suárez. They explain what they need and in which languages. I then seek out the most suitable professionals for the project. For example, if you require official translations in English, I’ll assign the task to a sworn English translator. However, if you need advertising material translated, the project will go to a marketing translator and a DTP specialist for formatting.
Step 2: Assigning the right translator
The translator receives the original document in an editable format and works with a professional translation tool that stores translated segments for consistency. The aim is to translate the text so that it reads as though it was originally written in the target language.
Before beginning the translation, the translator searches for parallel texts—similar documents in both languages. For example, they may compare a contract in French with a contract in Spanish to ensure accuracy. Some terms may be beyond their immediate knowledge, in which case they consult bilingual dictionaries, terminology databases like IATE, or other specialised resources. Ultimately, these expert translators use all the tools at their disposal to deliver the best possible translation.
Differences between general and specialised translation
So, what exactly is specialised translation? It’s translation that requires in-depth knowledge of a specific subject area. Here are a few examples:
